The Annapurna Sanctuary is a high glacial basin, situated below a chain of eleven of Nepal's major peaks, it has spectacular views of each of these giants, which includes; Huinchuli (6441m/21,132ft), Annapurna South (7,219m/23,683ft), Fang (7,647m/25,089ft), Annapurna I (8,091m/26,545ft), Roc Nior (7,485m/24,556ft), Glacier Dome (7,193m/23,600ft), Gangapurna (7,455m/24,457ft), Annapurna III (7,556m/24,787ft), Fluted Peak (6,390m/21,087ft), Machapuchhre (6,993m/22,944ft), and Mardi Himal (5,555m/18,331ft).
Acclimatisation is not a matter as we trek gradually climb from lower altitude to the higher. This magnificent glacial valley is called a 'Sanctuary' not because of laws that protect wildlife within its boundaries, but because of its natural serenity, beauty and the divine presence of the goddesses, Annapurna and Gangapurna, both are important figures in Hindu mythology.
This tour starts from Pokhara via the Seti Khola (river), continues to Dhampus, and enters the Modi Khola the following day via a forested route offering fine views of Machapuchhre. Most of the villages in this area belong to the Gurung people, a very prosperous group living primarily in the foothills surrounding Pokhara. These people depend largely on agriculture and sheep breeding for their subsistence, although large numbers of the men have served as Gurkha soldiers in the British & Indian army, thus it is a prosperous village.
After Ghandrung the trail enters into a dense bamboo forest clinging to the steep Modi Khola gorge. The gorge widens out and the trail gradually climbs up to the Machapuchare Base Camp.
