Difficulty: Strenuous Skill: Intermediate and above | | Tour Summary: If you are looking for an epic Himalayan adventure that combines trekking and mountain biking, then this is it!
Our HMB, Mount Kailash Tour will start at an elevation of 650 feet and climb to 18,300 feet, along with a near circumambulation of the Nepal and Tibetan Himalayas. Few cyclists get the chance to travel into the heart of the Himalayas and few mountains in the world can rival the grandeur of our objective: the sacred 22,028 ft. Mount Kailash, which we will circle on foot.
Starting from Kathmandu, Nepal, we complete the necessary arrangements for journey into the restricted Dolpo region located in Nepal’s far northwest and for travel into Tibet. It will take us two domestic flights to reach Simikot, which is nestled just south of the Tibetan boarder - this marks the start of our journey. We will be on foot until day 8, when the Nepal/Tibet border will be behind us. Once in Tibet, each day will be a combination of mountain bike riding and automobile travel, due to the distances we will need to travel and terrain.
Once over the border into Tibet, it will take us 5 days traveling over some of the most awesome scenery imaginable, until we reach Mount Kailash. For the next three days, we will travel by foot around this giant on what is called “Kora,” a pilgrimage which is an attempt at enlightenment. The Buddhists believe that one circuit will ease the sins of a lifetime, and if you travel around 108 times you’re guaranteed enlightenment during this lifetime. Not a bad reason to make the trip! Located here are four of the holiest rivers to both Hindu and Buddhist (Indus, Tsangpo [Bramhaputra], Karnali, and Sutlej), all flowing through Asia to the Sea of Bengal at Calcutta, India. The holy Ganges also originates in this area.
During the next 5 days, we’ll travel east enjoying the riding and views of the Tibetan Plateau heading toward the Friendship Highway and the north side of Lalung La, then into back into Nepal.
Once back in Nepal, we’ll stop at the Borderlands Resort to shower, rest, and reminisce about our adventure. Your last day of biking will be a 99 km descent into the Kathmandu valley and your hotel.
The last full day in Kathmandu is left as a free day for gift buying or last minute sightseeing. |
