| | Sikkim is a tiny pocket within India, but it seems more connected to Nepal and Tibet. Its heritage is unique and once was a kingdom within itself. But when India gained its freedom from the British Empire, the small kingdom of Sikkim fell into Indian hands.
Sikkim for many years was isolated from foreigners. In fact, this region was only opened to tourism in 1990. The people of Sikkim (Sikkimese) still maintain their traditional ways in clothing and lifestyle.
The district of Darjeeling has been a very popular spot for touring the massive tea plantations here. Many varieties of tea are grown in Darjeeling and sold around the world. This is also the home of Everest hero Tenzing Norgay, the first Nepalese citizen to climb Mount Everest (he did so with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953). It is not surprising to find great mountaineers coming out of this area, since it sits next to Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world.
The Tibetan Buddhist religion is the thread that binds this small country together. With over 70 monasteries spread throughout the countryside, you are constantly reminded of Sikkim’s past and present - and its commitment to the Buddhist faith.
Our HMB bike tour will take us along beautiful country roads with views of distant Himalayan mountain peaks and lush green landscapes. We’ll stop to visit tea plantations, Buddhist monasteries, as well as colorful Tibetan markets and handicraft shops. |
