Buying Bike Lights
Bike lights are essential when cycling between dusk and dawn. There are a variety a bike lights available and the right one for you will depend on where, time, and style of riding you are planning on doing. Factors you should consider are;
  • Do I need lights so I can be seen?
  • Do I need lights to so that I can see?
Where Will I Be Riding?

Area Light type Reasons
Residential areas Flashing front and rear lights Street lights generally shine enough light to allow you to see where you are going and any potential hazards on the road.
Off road or where there are no street lights Powerful lights which lights up the road in front of you If you are mountain biking at night or road riding in areas with out street lights you will require a more powerful light which lights up the road in front of you.

What Lights Will I Need?

  • Most models show a flashing or steady light, which are very eye catching.
  • Improve your chances of being seen.
  • Efficient as they drain batteries slowly (batteries are most efficient if left on flash mode).
  • They are generally affordable ($15 to $80)
  • Not effective at lighting up the road in front of you.
  • Price can vary a lot depending on quality.

Halogen Lights
(High Power Battery)
To see
  • Light up the road in front of you.
  • Most come with re-chargeable batteries which range from sealed led-acid batteries (cheapest, but the heaviest) to nickel-metal-hydride batteries.
  • Paying more will get you greater Watts (better shine), a lighter and longer lasting battery.
  • Range a great deal in quality and price the major factor being battery quality.

Dynamo Lights To see
  • Good option for frequent riders who require a descent amount a visibility from their light.
  • Also known as generator lights.
  • Powered by rubbing on the wheel or hub.
  • More efficient than Halogen lights Cheaper than Halogen lights but generally not as bright.

Bike lighting technology is continually upgrading. New lighting options are continually released to the market, including hybrid options which fall in between the above categories. When buying lights confirm the functionality you require, checking that the lights caters to your requirements, and are within your budget.
